On the Jukebox // Mod Sun

Hello friends!!

It's been a hot minute since I had any music to talk about. I'm one of those people that get stuck on artists and of late, I've been on a killer Grateful Dead kick. That happens every few years. But, I recently got into this dude, Mod Sun thru one of the super adorable Youtubers I watch, Meghan Hughes. Rap has never really been my thing, I generally just don't connect to it. But man, this dude got me connected. The first song I chose to share with you guys today is my jam when I'm feeling down. There's something about this dude's smile that just lifts you up, he radiates positivity and I'm so into that....like a damn magnet. He's got this amazing blend of that bouncy gansta rap of the early 90's and that hippy magic that I'm drawn to. He's just fun. He's coming to Pittsburgh in April and I think Bry and I may go see him. You should too! So grab your tie dye and turn that shit up, let's get happy!

The Jukebox// Lake Street Dive

Hello Friends,

I had to pop in with a little music today! I've been bopping around the kitchen all morning singing this song to myself. It's such a catchy tune, and ever since the started playing on the radio, it's been stuck in my head. I've been obsessed with this band for a while now. When their song, 'You Go Down Smooth', came out a couple years ago, I started internet stalking them. The lead vocalist is right around my vocal range, which makes them the perfect car karaoke jam band. Their new album, Side Pony, comes out tomorrow...and if my bank account says it's cool; I might get it.  But, take a second to jam out with this amazing band...and get back to me. Let me know whatcha think down in the comments!!! What have you been listening to lately?

The Jukebox:: Josh Ritter

Hello friends,

Since my little (accidental) hiatis from blogging, I have not be able to share anything, let alone music. Today's jukebox is a pretty sweet one. I'm kind of in love with the man, don't tell Bry! Josh Ritter is another one of those songs I heard on WYEP on a late night's drive home. This first song is one of those song that breaks through all the bullshit running threw my head and makes me turn up the radio. There's something warm and snuggly about his voice. I expect a candle to be burning, and a cute dude in a sweater handing me a cup of hot tea when this song starts playing. It's the kind of tune you melt into, and get nostalgic about something that was never there.

This second song is evocative of my youth in a weird way. Something about the jumpy beap reminds me of gatherings with my cousins, and the almost bubbly country music my mom would play. It's strange how music can take you back like that, especially when it's new music. Something new bringing up feelings like that tune was always playing in the background. I'm a sentimental heart, if you couldn't tell. Ritter's music has a way of pulling that out, I suppose. And, in a way I guess that makes his music work...maybe that's what he's going for. And he's pretty handsome, so that helps....

Who have you guys been listening to lately?

::The Jukebox:: Courtney Barnett

Hello friends,

It's been a hot minute since we listened to some tunes together. This week's spotlight is a new voice I heard on the radio a few weeks ago. At first, I really wasn't into Courtney's music. She has more of a spoken word feel to her songwriting. Usually, that's not my style. I love a good melody that flows and you can sing out to. Though, after a few more listens she started worming her way into my head, and I found myself singing this song after I turned off the radio. In a market flooded with pretty little song birds, Courtney Barnett sets herself apart with her almost monotone voice and upbeat guitar licks. Her lyrics are playful, and truly make you listen to what she's saying. Words can often get lost in a sea of over produced, sugary melodies and drum beats; but Courtney is able to set herself apart with intelligent wordplay and simple songwriting. It's kind of brilliant what she's doing.

Give it a listen, and let me know what you think down in the comments!!

The Jukebox: Belle and Sebastian

Hello friends,

Ready to boogie? This song is incredibly infectious and gets stuck in my head every time. I'm writing this very late at night, and I'm positive this is going to creep into my dreams tonight. I love this track for it's bouncy 70's beat; that really just makes you want to move. It's classic that way. I heard it on the radio weeks ago and it's one of those that sticks with you. It feels nostalgic, like some thing you heard at your aunt's wedding in the late 80's. You can almost smell the cheap beer, and uncle's cheap cologne. Give it an honest listen, and tell me you don't want to start bouncing within the first few frames.

What have you been listening to lately?

::The Jukebox:: Iron and Wine

Hello friends,

Today's Jukebox is quite a hard hitting one. I'm sure a lot of you have heard of Iron and Wine. If you haven't, please go watch all the videos you can find of him on Youtube. There's something in his voice that sounds so nostalgic to me. In a weird way, it makes me sad. A good sad, though. It's like when I heard it, I'm sad for a memory that I don't really remember, or one that's just simply not mine. Give it a listen, and let me know what you think.

The Juke Box: Willam Belli

Hello friends,

Today's Juke Box is extra special. It's one of my favorite songs, and it's so fun!! WARNING!! This is not a song for kids, and those with homosexual sensitivities. I AM A GAY RIGHTS ADVOCATE. I love the gays, and I feel like they're gifts from above, honestly. Have you ever met a more vibrant, talented, loving, and open group of people? NO! And, my favorite subculture are the cross dressers, and transsexuals. Drag Queens are my idols, and Willam Belli is god.

Today's song, 'Boy is a Bottom' is going to get stuck in your head. It's a parody of "Girl on Fire", and it's so much better. Bryan hates this song thou, only because David and I play it every single time we're together....then proceed to sing it at the top of our lungs all the way to the end. I'm obsessed. So I figured today I would grant you with both the English and Spanish versions of the song. Both of which are hysterically brilliant and catchy! Enjoy!!!

::The JukeBox:: alt-J

Hello friends,
Today's jukebox is one that I absolutely can not get out of my head. This song has been stuck up there for weeks, and every once in a while, when I'm not expecting it, it'll pop back up and stay there for hours! I've been super into this song ever since I heard it on the radio. It's so poppy, and energetic. The perfect recipe for a ear worm. Listen at your own risk. This song is the shit.

::The Juke Box: Laura Veirs

Hello friends!!

Today's Juke Box artist is one that I recently came across thanks to my trusty WYEP. Her voice is very whimsical, which is always up my alley, and when I saw the video- I fell in love. I look forward to listening to more of her work. The city I live in is so invested in their cultural enrichment, and I love that I have outlets like WYEP  to educate me on the daily. But, back to the magical Laura Veirs....

This song that I've chosen to share today is kind of sad, but the melody and imagery that she creates is so wonderful. I get lost daydreaming about these magical far off lands when I here this song. The video lived up to my expectations and more when I went to research this more. I'm really picky with songs I choose to put up here, and a large deciding factor is the video. When the whole package is presented so lovely, its most certainly worth sharing! Enjoy!!

The Juke Box: Brandi Carlile

Hello friends!

Today I'm here with another installment of The Juke Box with one of my favorite folk/country artist of the past decade. Brandi Carlile is such an amazing musician. Her voice just makes me want to go on a long hike. Her style is very reminiscent of the likes of Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline. The song I've chosen to share with you today is one that's been stuck in my head for quite a while now. It's catchy and the message behind it is pretty excellent. Give it a listen!

The Juke Box: Elle King

Hello friends!

Oh man, I have a treat for you guys today! This lovely lady is quite the gem, and the version of this song that I found really showcases that. Her gravely vocals and rough, rhythm guitar take you back to the days of Blondie and Cindy Lauper. She's been all over the airwaves lately, and radio can't seem to get enough of this song. You guys are gonna love it. Turn up the volume to 10!

The Juke Box: Chvrches

Hello Friends,

This is a fun one. I really like this song. I've heard this a dozen times on the radio and I can't lie, I turn it up every time. It's very 80's but in the very very very best way possible. The lyrics are kind of somber, but the melody and bouncy electro beat in the background keep it light and fun. Her voice reminds me a little bit of Debbie Gibson. No hate here. I love me some Debbie Gibson. Their music is pretty chill overall, and completely listenable on a regular basis. Her voice is that pleasant. I love their vibe!

The Juke Box: Love Songs for Valentine's Day

Hello Friends,

I'm here to share all my squishy Valentine's Day feelings with you because... well, for once I can actually say I am completely in love with the person I'm with this year. He makes my heart swell with the warmest, lamest, squishiest feels ever. No joke. Damn you, Bryan...turned me into a girl! :P

Well, these 3 songs are for him. They remind me of him every time I hear them and my heart just sings every time they come on the radio. So who ever you are, and where ever you are this Valentine's, I hope you feel loved. Even if you don't feel it, know you are loved...even if it's just love radiating from my little corner of the internet!

Happy Valentine's Day, EVERYONE!! (Especially Bryan, though <3)

(not even gonna lie, ^this song always makes me cry....I'm so fucking lame.)

The Juke Box: Warpaint

Hello Friends,

I FRICKEN LOVE THIS BAND. Yea. I had to get that out of the way. Normally, for a Juke Box, I would only post one song of the band/artist. But for serious, I had to post 3. You guys need to listen to all of them, no kidding. I think you'll love them too.

They're kind of reminisant of The Bangles, but with a bit of Jefferson Airplane flare. Ugh...I love them so much! And what is up with the perfect lighting and wind in every single video, they're perfect. I can't stand how awesome these ladies are. They totally make me want to pick my guitar back up and start playing again. The urge is there, they're totally making it hard to silence that urge.

Enjoy the trippy rock goddesses of Warpaint. They're killer.

The Juke Box: Adriana Grande

Hello Friends,

Ya know, there's probably people out there that are questioning my choice of this song right now. It's so poppy and so bubblegum it's scary. BUT I LOVE IT. She's like a little Mariah Carey, and not the Glitter Mariah, the Honey Mariah. And I could listen to this on repeat for a week! Every once in a while we need some bubble gum pop, rock gets too serious some times. Loosen up, folks! Let's have some fun!!
