Textiles and Threads:: A Bear in the Woods

PhotoGrid_1452814228063

Hello friends,

Long time, no outfit post, huh?? Bry and I went out on one of days off recently to run some errands, and ended our day with a little walk on the Braddock Trail at Frick Park. This is one of my favorite parks in the county, the trails are just magical and it's fun to have such a wonderful escape so close to the city! It's been pretty cold here in town this week, and I really have been enjoying the snowy views. The snow makes everything so quiet and that's my favorite part.

For these outfits, Bry and I  went for a kind of grungy look. We've been reminiscing pretty hard about the 90's lately. A big catalyst is our vests. We've been kind of obsessive in finding cool pins and patches for both of them. He's been working on his for a good bit longer than I have. I just picked up my vest from Target 2 weeks ago or so, he's had his since before Christmas. There's quite a bit of a difference, but I just picked up 3 super awesome patches from Etsy and I'll (hopefully) be sewing those onto my vest some time this week.

Even though it wasn't all that cold on the day we shot this photos, I still wanted to bundle up a bit. I've noticed over the years that a pair of tights and flowy dress keeps me warmer that a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Bundled up with my favorite green jacket from Delia's (from 2010), this outfit was pretty snuggly. I had the plaid shirt on under my jacket, but it actually got too warm. Bryan is always cold, so he had multiple layers on that day. Boots are always a must when we got for a hike or a walk on the trails, especially since its snowy and a good bit slick. Bry is also wearing the scarf I got him for Christmas this year from Urban Outfitters.

This was really fun for us. Since the death of my previous computer, we haven't done many photo shoots or photo projects. It's kind of my favorite. He's always so willing to help me out with my silly little projects, and always does it with a big handsome smile! I'm looking forward to more days like these this year, and can't wait to share it all with you guys!!

Threads & Textiles: Doe a Dear

Hello friends,

Finally, the weather in Pittsburgh has dried up and I got some time to play in the woods. Though, the day that I decided to go to my favorite park there were a few interruptions that made taking these photos kind of hard. I usually sit down by the river bank a little further back in the woods from the actual park. There's a gorgeous view of the river bend and boats like to go past; which makes me smile. But, the day I decided to shoot there were 2 teenage boys that thought it would be fun to follow me into the woods and make me uncomfortable. Instead of being polite and leaving me alone, or just saying hello, they decided to sneak around the woods and watch me from behind trees. It was really weird, and they stayed out there for a good twenty minutes. So instead of making it any stranger than it already was, I just sat down by the river to draw and waited for them to leave. They did after a while. But, it was really weird and uncomfortable.

Anyways, after the little turds left I was able to run around freely to take my photos. I picked this skirt up at the Old Navy Outlet Store at the Tanger Outlets in Washington on the way back home from our little trip to West Virginia. A lot of those stores up there are still very expensive for being outlet stores, but the Old Navy one has some pretty solid deals. I picked up 2 skirts and 2 V-neck tees for only $24...that's a damn good deal! So, if you ever down that way, I'd suggest stopping. I believe the ring I'm wearing is from Forever XXI but I got it so very long ago that I don't think they'd still have this design in stock. I'm sure there's rings around that are comparable. Geodes, crystals, and natural rocks are so very popular nowadays.

I enjoyed the little time I got to spend with my favorite little spot. Hopefully, I'll get to go back and hopefully the weather is just as lovely. Do you guys have any favorite spots to sit and relax?

::Threads & Textiles:: Rainbow Bright & Mini Studio Tour

PhotoGrid_1437754814162

Hello friends,

I've been spending a ton of time in my sewing room lately; in preparation for an upcoming shop update. The update was supposed to go up this past weekend, but with a ton of plans I wasn't able to find the time. They'll be up this week for sure though. But I decided to look kinda cute last week, and snapped a few photos. All of Wednesday, and most of Thursday were spent sewing my little fingers off. Somehow, dressing up makes me feel more productive. I can't sew in my pj's.

You'll notice in a few photos that I've got some pretty gnarly pit hair. I was a little hesitant to photograph my lady pit hair. Over the months of growing it out, I've gone thru up's and down's of my confidence regarding this issue. What once was incredible, self empowering, self motivated statement, has become a question of femininity, and normality. Which is just ridiculous. Media is such a powerful thing. But, I wanted to photograph myself this week embracing my body hair in it's natural state. It's a vote of confidence in my own corner.

So let's talk about this outfit....I walked up to the Dunkin' Doughnuts up the street, and got some of the oddest, and most offensive looks from strangers on the corner waiting for the bus. I love color, but surprisingly most of Pittsburgh finds it odd. It reminded me of when I used to take the bus to my old job in the mall. I was 21, and determined to look as weird and colorful as I possibly could. Back then I found those stares to be a liberating middle finger to normal society, but now it's a little alarming. I'm not as brash as I used to be. I've certainly calmed down, and that's pretty good for me. Though, from time to time I like to be rather bright.

This is such a fun outfit for me. I love outfits like this- so simple, movable, and colorful. Color blocking is still one of my favorite outfit trends. As I get older, I've come to appreciate solid color pieces and simple prints.  I like to mix and match several pieces and stock my wardrobe with pieces that'll work well together with mostly everything. It extends the life and possibilities of your wardrobe. Maybe we'll talk about that more later!

::Textiles & Threads:: Strange Times

PhotoGrid_1437162164838

Hello friends,

The weather here in Pittsburgh is finally starting to dry out a bit. It's been raining since late May. June and most of July have been a wash out. But the sun has started to poke itself out behind the clouds, giving me the opportunity to get dressed up and go exploring! I was on my way to pick Bryan up from work when I noticed a little cemetery off to the side of the road. There it was on the tiniest little hill next to the mill (teehee for rhyming) tucked away among a little bunch of trees. I had been looking for a place to stop for photos and this seemed fun!

I'm probably doing six different kinds of disrespectful dancing around what seems to be a military cemetery but, the lighting was sweet, and it looked really rad. How often do you think these graves get a visit? I bet not very often. I went to visit, and now I'm memorializing them in this photo set. I think it's rather beautiful in a way. Give that a thought. But anyway, it was ridiculously hot on this day. Tights were mostly likely not the best wardrobe choice for the weather. But, then again when have I ever made an outfit choice that was?

This skirt is rather short though, and tights were a necessary evil. I liked the pairing of very bright primary colors with simple makeup and accessories. It gives the colors room to breathe.....and doesn't make me look like too much of a nut as a cross a busy highway to hop over into an old ass cemetery. Nope, totally don't look crazy....
I had fun regardless. It's been quite a while since I felt up to doing an outfit post. So, I'm pretty excited to be getting back into it. Gives me an excuse to get dressed in the morning, and get out of the house.

Any one else the works from home have difficulty getting out of the house regularly?

Have you written an outfit post recently? Share with me down in the comments, I'd love to check it out!

::Threads & Textiles:: Playing Dressup in the Backyard

Hello friends,

Recently, my sister Amanda Jean gave me a very large garbage bag full of clothes that don't fit her anymore. I love getting hand me downs from my baby sister. She gets skinny, I get a new wardrobe! I don't mind at all. Hand me downs have been a treasured tradition between family and friends of mine. We share clothes like its going out of style! In that amazing bag of clothes I found this crazy fun skirt. It's really fun to twirl in, as you can see. I had a rare day when I got the house to myself on a warm day. So, I took advantage of it, and took some silly photos in the backyard. I didn't have anything to do on this day, but playing dress up for no reason turned out to be really really fun! We've also been cleaning out my dad's house in preparation of moving in, and I've been finding a ton of my old clothes. This flannel was one of my favorites in college. I don't know if it shrunk in the wash...or maybe I'm getting closer to 30 than I'd like to admit. It still fits, kind of. Hahah! I wish the weather would even out and get a little warmer to I can do more fun days like this. The more clothes I find at dad's house, the more I want to play dress up! C'mon warm weather!!
